Originally, the Playstation was going to be a Super NES/Super Famicom add-on that Nintendo could use to counter the Sega CD. Yes, believe it or not, Nintendo and Sony, for a time, were working together. But when Nintendo betrayed Sony for Philips, Ken Kutagari convinced Sony to continue work on the Playstation, and Sony succeded in gathering a large amount of video game companies to develop games for the Playstation. Sony also succeded in marketing the Playstation to the older audience as well as targeting the younger audience. Sony also succceded in creating hype over the Playstation launch. Sony also succeded in creating a powerful 32-bit system that could compete with Nintendo and Sega's next-gen systems. When the Playstation launched and sold hundreds of thousands in it's first week, Sony knew they had a winner, and the Playstation continued to outsell every other system up until 2000, when the Playstation 2 came out. The Playstation also became the first console to reach the 100 million mark in the number of units sold. The Playstation also had a very long production run. It lasted from 1995 (1994 in Japan) up until early 2005. The Playstation could be considered one of the most successful consoles of all time.
