Sega desperately wanted a share of the portable market, and Sega thought that if they could market a portable system with a color screen, compared to the original GameBoy's green-ish screen, that system might be able to have more commercial appeal, thus capturing a large percent of the market. Unfortunately, the GameGear's color screen caused many problems. The battery life for the GameGear was only about 5 hours, compared to the GameBoy's 15 hours, and the GameGear costed $150.00 at launch, compared to the GameBoy's price tag of only $100.00. The GameGear also suffered from a lack of support from video game companies due to the restrictive contract Nintendo put on GameBoy developers that forbade them from making a game on any non-Nintendo system. In the end, the GameGear only ended up with 9% of the market, and instead of competing with the GameBoy ended up trying to eat up the small percent of the market the Atari Lynx and TurboExpress had.
