After failing with the Saturn, Sega entered the market early with the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was everything the Saturn wasn't: It was affordable, it was powerful, it had a comfortable controller, it had many great games, it had alot of support from developers, it was innovative, and it appealed to the mass market. Sega tried to make people forget about the old Sega and create a "New" Sega, and their plan worked. Dreamcast had 4-way multiplayer, had wireless capabilites that let you surf the net and play people around the world. It was also the first 128-bit system. It could also play music cd's. The Dreamcast sold extremely well, and Sega's market share steadily increased and in a few months passed the Nintendo 64 as the second best-selling system. Unfortunately, once the hugely-hyped Playstation 2 came out, the Dreamcast stopped selling well. Sony marketed the PS2 as a video game player and a DVD player. The Dreamcast could not play DVD's. The PS2 was also much more powerful than the Dreamcast, and many believed it was cooler and even better, even though the PS2 had very few good games in it's first year. The Dreamcast was discontinued five months after the PS2 came out, and Sega quit the console business to focus entirely on making games for all systems. The Dreamcast was remembered as one of the greatest systems of all time, and it certainly did not get the attention and lasting value it deserved.
