Nintendo finally gave the GameBoy a color screen in 1998. Unlike other, earlier portable color systems, it had a very long battery life, and was extremely affordable (Both were about as much as the original GameBoy). It was backwards compatible with all original GameBoy games. It was sold in a variety of colors. Nintendo succeded in retaining the majority of the portable market, and the GameBoy Color's success was just as large as that of the original GameBoy.
